The Stats: Millwall 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday played out a 0-0 draw at The Den on Tuesday. It was the first time since 1947 a game between the two sides ended goalless.

It was a fourth successive  clean sheet for Wednesday, while Millwall have now not scored in the league for three games in a row. Millwall have now conceded just four goals in the last five games. The worry now is that the goals down the other end are drying up. Just one goal scored in the last 5 league games is becoming a concern.

Below I take a look at the stats from last nights encounter with Sheffield Wednesday.

Possession

It’s no surprise that the victors had more of the ball, we all know that Millwall’s game plan means they are very happy to be without the ball. They had almost 42% of the ball last night compared to 58.1 for Wednesday.

Shots

Millwall managed just 3 shots at Swansea last Saturday but were a lot more creative last night. 10 shots with six on target was a key improvement from Swansea but none of those shots really caused problems the Sheffield Wednesday keeper. The Lions are struggling for goals, Neil Harris also saw Lee Gregory leave the pitch hopefully its nothing more than cramp.

Passing

Millwall do not play pretty. Their passing accuracy is one of the worst in the league due to their style of play.  The direct style often see’s balls played long and not always hitting their intended targets. A passing percentage of 61.2% last night is no surprise. Wednesday’s was not much better on 66.5%.

Attack

There was no clear cut chances for other side, this shows how much of the game was a battle. Neither side created any major chances, or chances that you would say must be scored. The lack of bite up front is becoming a problem for Neil Harris and something that needs to acted on in the summer. A cornerstone of Millwall’s threat is set pieces, especially corners, five to Wednesday’s four but neither side challenged the keeper from those.

Defence

One part of the team that is showing massive improvement is the defence. A total of 79 clearances were made by Millwall’s defence. 31 of them headed. Key to that improvement has been an upturn in form of Shaun Hutchinson. His form has seen the rate of goals conceded go down and some more solid performances from the defence as a whole. Jake Cooper also looks a lot more assured when next to the Millwall skipper.
