Derby stayed sixth after winning 2-0 at Bristol City thanks to goals in either half from Tom Lawrence and Jayden Bogle.
It leaves Bristol City four points adrift of the Rams with two games left to play.
Middlesbrough, meanwhile, came back from a goal down to beat Reading 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium. They are level on points with Derby, although Frank Lampard's side have a game in hand and a better goal difference.
Rotherham were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship after promotion-chasing West Brom came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory at The Hawthorns.
The Millers looked set to keep their survival hopes alive when Clark Robertson gave them a 50th-minute lead.
But Jay Rodriguez drew Albion level from the penalty spot in the 77th minute before Rekeem Harper's first goal for the club two minutes later sealed Rotherham's fate.
That result meant Millwall are safe after their goalless draw with Stoke earlier in the day.

Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea both saw their slim playoff hopes ended after drawing on Saturday.

Karim Ansarifard's goal gave Nottingham Forest a 1-0 victory over managerless QPR at Loftus Road, where Costel Pantilimon saved Nahki Wells' late penalty.
Birmingham shared the spoils with Wigan in a 1-1 draw.
At the top of the table, Sheffield United are on the verge of a return to the Premier League after a 2-0 win over already-relegated Ipswich and then Norwich beat Blackburn 2-1 to secure their own promotion to the Premier League.
