Reported Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City and Wigan Athletic target makes move to League One club

We reported here on The72 that Motherwell midfielder Alex Rodriguez Gorrin was on the radar of a number of Championship and League One clubs this summer, and now his departure from the Scottish Premiership club has been confirmed.

Championship sides Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City, Wigan Athletic and Millwall were all credited with interest in Alex Rodriguez Gorrin, as were League One pair Ipswich Town and Portsmouth. However, it is Oxford United who have completed a deal to sign the Spanish midfielder this summer.

Oxford United announced the arrival of Alex Rodriguez Gorrin on Thursday night. The 25-year-old joins the club for free on a two-and-a-half year deal from Motherwell, with the option to extend his deal with the club by another year.

Gorrin enjoyed a successful season with Motherwell, making an impressive impact on the side after breaking into Well’s first-team picture. He played 25 games across all competitions, forming a strong partnership with highly sought after midfielder David Turnbull and Allan Campbell.

Speaking to Oxford’s club website upon the announcement, Gorrin expressed his joy over the move and his excitement over the upcoming League One season.

“I saw what Oxford are building as a club, spoke to the Manager and knew this was a good club to come to. I am looking forward to coming in on Saturday to join the first day of pre-season and really can’t wait to play a part in what I am sure will be a very successful season here.”

U’s boss Karl Robinson also had his say on the midfielder, giving the club’s fans a hint of what is to expect from Gorrin next season.

“There was a fair amount of interest from a lot of clubs. That doesn’t surprise me because he was highly impressive last season and really caught the eye. He is a real competitor and a terrific athlete. He loves a challenge, is a good tackler and we think will be a very good player for us.”
