Charlton Athletic loan star impressing Chelsea

Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has revealed (quotes via the Metro) that loaned in midfielder Conor Gallagher has impressed parent club Chelsea, with the Premier League side surprised by his strong form at The Valley.

While Conor Gallagher is a highly-rated young talent at Stamford Bridge, given that this is only his first season of senior football, his strong start to life on loan with Charlton Athletic has taken most by surprise.

The 19-year-old has scored four goals and provided two assists from midfield in his 11 appearances for the Addicks, holding down a place in Lee Bowyer’s midfield. And, his form has not gone unnoticed. Chelsea technical director Claude Makelele is said to have been thoroughly impressed with how Gallagher is getting on with the Addicks, saying:

“Conor isn’t bad… not a bad player! Has he surprised me? He’s scored five goals, one every two games, for a 19-year-old kid who’s never played men’s football before, he’ll surprise anyone. I think he’s even surprised Chelsea. I don’t think they knew how far he could go so soon.

“They had people come in on Thursday. Claude Makelele (technical mentor at Chelsea) came in to speak to us about the loan, how Conor is getting on, their thoughts on him and they’re delighted. Conor is a good player, one to watch in the future.”

Both Chelsea and Charlton will be hoping that Gallagher can continue his strong start to life in senior football, as he continues to help the Addicks upon their return to the Championship, in which they have exceeded expectations massively.
