Brentford 2-0 Millwall – Takeaways from Griffin Park as Millwall see first away win slip away in dramatic fashion

Millwall fell to their fourth defeat of the season at Griffin Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions blew a 2-0 lead after 84 minutes to lose 3-2 against Brentford who sealed the victory through Ollie Watkins’ strike deep into stoppage time. Here are some talking points from the game.

Another late collapse costs Millwall dear

Old habits returned at Griffin Park. Millwall have had a significant problem seeing out the last ten minutes of games over the last 14 months. It all started on the opening day of last season when after 88 minutes the Lions were 2-0 up against Middlesbrough, they went on to concede twice in stoppage time to draw 2-2. Late goals were something that would continue to haunt the Lions throughout the season. Millwall have now conceded late goals in their last two away games that has cost them five points.

Lions struggled early on against the Brentford attack

Brentford may have been goal shy this season but it’s not for the want of trying. Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma caused the Millwall defence a number of problems early on. A lovely ball in from Benrahma fell at the feet of Karelis who saw his shot saved brilliantly from point blank range. He also hit the post in the first half. Watkins would have felt like he was in personal dual with Bartosz Bialkowski who made a number of stops to deny the man that had scored all but one of Brentford’s league goals this season before their late comeback on Saturday.

Bialkowski’s stunning first half display

The Poland international has not been short of criticism since he joined the Lions from Ipswich on a season long loan. Some would say that has been deserved for mistakes against Hull and QPR, but he has also put in some brilliant displays. At Blackburn he was very good and in the first half at Griffin Park. He made some stunning saves during the opening period to deny Karelis, Benrahma and Watkins. He also saved Watkins’ penalty as Brentford just could not find a way to breach the Millwall defence until the closing stages of the game.

Bradshaw finding form

Millwall are now beginning to see the best of Tom Bradshaw. The former Barnsley striker missed the majority of last season after picking up an ACL injury. The striker has now scored in the last three games against Luton, Leeds and Brentford. He has scored five goals this season and is on track to beat Lee Gregory’s record of goals per season at Championship level. Having a consistent goalscorer has been a problem for Millwall since they reached the second tier in 2017. Lee Gregory and George Saville finished as joint top scorers in 2017/18 with 10. Gregory managed 7 in the league last season which was the highest amount by a Millwall player. Bradshaw and Jed Wallace are tied on 4 league goals this season.
