Nathan Jones assesses Stoke City’s loss to Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking to the club’s official website after the game, Stoke City boss Nathan Jones has said that his side’s performance against Sheffield Wednesday was “bitty” and “disjointed” as they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Stoke City had seemingly been undergoing somewhat of a change of fortunes after winning their last two games, but a loss to Sheffield Wednesday has brought an end to a brief winning streak. The Potters lost after Massimo Luongo’s first-half strike in a scrappy tie at Hillsborough.

Speaking after the game, Jones has said that it was not a great game between the two sides, saying that it was as tough and disjointed as he had expected it to be. He said:

“It wasn’t a great game to be fair in terms of everything. First half we didn’t do the basics well enough but we should have come in at 0-0 and then we could have regrouped. We looked a lot better second half and came out and had a right go but it was a really bitty, disjointed performance.

“The injuries didn’t help us because we couldn’t get any fluency. We lost three players through injury and had to finish the game with 10 men. It meant that we couldn’t do certain things that we wanted to do. In the end the error has cost us really.

“We knew it would be a tough game coming here – they are a direct side and retakes take a long time because they want to go into (Steven) Fletcher, play off him and they are good at that.

“It was always going to be a disjointed match and not a fluent one. It wasn’t going to be the same as the last two against Swansea and Fulham but if we literally just put in a proper performance then the minimum we come away with is a point.”
